Fire Cider

A warming traditional herbal preparation made with apple cider vinegar, ginger, garlic, horseradish and spices. Discover how to prepare it at home and incorporate it into your seasonal routine.

Fire cider is one of my favourite traditional herbal preparations for the colder months.

It’s a spicy infused vinegar made with ingredients like apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, onion, horseradish, chilli, cloves.

I simply chop and grate everything, place it into a clean jar and cover it completely with apple cider vinegar.

Then I leave it to infuse for around 3–4 weeks, giving the jar a gentle shake every day or two.

After that, I strain it and usually add a little honey to soften the sharpness.

The result is warming, spicy and full of flavour.

I like taking a small amount during the autumn and winter months, or simply adding it to dressings, marinades and warm water.

It’s a beautiful example of how everyday kitchen ingredients can also have a long tradition of use in herbal medicine.

And yes… it definitely has a kick
